The Why Phase and the Transition to No Naps

I feel like both my kids have suddenly hit new "grown up" stages in their lives. Anna is finally taking longer naps - only mothers can truly appreciate the wonder of this, is eating solids, sitting up, and loves to smile and talk to everyone!! I'm going to be in big trouble when she finally starts talking for reals.

Josh has hit the Why phase. I totally understand why my Dad coined the term, "because duck" when he got sick of answering our endless questions. Here's a few samples of our recent conversations. See if you can come up with answers.

"Why is Anna a baby and I'm a big boy?" - Well you start in Mommy's tummy and then you come out and are a baby and then you grow big like you and then bigger like Mom and Dad. "Why?"

"Why is that the letter P?"

"Why do you have a shirt on Daddy?" - Justin doesn't like to wear a shirt after work and happened to have one on the other day, Josh started freaking out thinking he was leaving and ended with this question.

We went to a park with a duck pond today, which Josh fell into while I was nursing Anna - it was funny. "Why did I fall in Mom". I think you got too close and the rocks are slippery. "Why are the rocks slippery? " Because they're wet. "Why are they wet?" ... you get the idea Finally, "only ducks should swim in the water not JOSH!!"

I put one in the side bar too about groceries that's quite entertaining. I'm drawing a big blank now, but seriously he asks this question all day long and no answer is good enough. If I finally say I don't know he says, "I'm getting so frustrated mom!" I'll add more as I think of them.

He's also stopped napping everyday. There's usually one or two days a week when he doesn't nap now. Which is ok since he's still happy and he'll leave me alone for at least an hour. (It's not great but it's ok). The day after he doesn't nap he typically takes a 3-4 hour nap and then won't go to bed at night. Awesome!! I hate transitions, and the fact that you can never predict which day will be which. He's also become a master at procrastinating going to bed in general. It usually ends with, "I need something else"(after water, teeth brushed, prayers, stories, songs, books etc.) What do you need Josh? (if you don't reply he just yells for a really long time. "ummmm I don't know, and grunts." and that's when you know you've finally won.

This sounds sooo familiar! Rachel started this stage when she was about Josh's age and then it went away...but now it is back with a vengence! I had to laugh at some of Josh's 'whys'--I think the most annoying part is the ones that don't seem worth my energy to explain "why is this the letter p" ?! because it is! lol! good luck with that one.

Oh dear- Josh always seems to be a month or so ahead of Julian and Caleb when it comes to the 'nap phases' so I know we're up next when it comes to losing their nap! Oh dear. Could be any day now...

We can't wait to see you guys, and meet Anna! No naps would be crazy, Joe's transitioning to one (I think) nap and that's crazy enough! Oh, and it was good to know that you were commenting under the name Michael, because you had once earlier, and I was freaking out to Zach a little bit that some weirdo was commenting on our blog :)
